Two Projects, One Heart

I’ve been juggling a couple of big projects lately, both with nearly the same deadline—no wonder this past week flew by!

Dissonance in progress, waiting for the final images of birds on branches on top.

The first is my Dissonance series. Earlier this year, I was invited to participate in an exhibition called The Art of Resistance. I already had these works in mind, so I said yes.

I chose the title Dissonance because that’s exactly what I feel when I see people who claim the name of Jesus while supporting policies that contradict his teachings. Each piece pairs an image of a dead bird with a living one layered in front, set against scriptures from the Sermon on the Mount, basic truths that Christian Nationalist leaders are now ignoring.

Creating this body of work has been both painful and deeply meaningful. I’ll be sharing it publicly for the first time on Saturday, October 11, at 7 p.m. during the Sacramento Women’s Chorus Phenomenal concert at The Sofia in Sacramento. A second exhibition will follow at the I Street Studios on October 25 & 26, I’ll share more details soon.

The second project is an interactive prayer piece I began several weeks ago at Bridgeway Christian Church in Roseville, where I attend. Each year we prepare for our annual Worship Prayer and Healing Gathering with a forty-day fast. At the start of the fast, we hold a special evening of prayer and worship. That night, I invited people to write their prayers on slips of paper, which I collaged onto a three-by-four-foot wood panel. There were so many prayers that I even photographed some and layered them as photo transfers.

The still untitled interactive prayer piece getting the tree transferred onto it.

I’m now adding the image of a bare tree over those prayers. During our upcoming Gathering, people will be able to write new prayers on tracing paper and also share answered prayers. For each answered prayer, I’ll add a leaf to the tree.

All are welcome to the Worship Prayer and Healing Gathering on Sunday, October 12, at 6 p.m. at Bridgeway Christian Church.

Both of these projects come from a place of faith and are very close to my heart. I hope you’ll join me at one of these events.
