City in a Hill

I’m honored to share that my newest piece, City in a Hill, has been selected for the Live Auction and Gala at Outside the Box: Reimagined, a fundraising event supporting the Placer Artists Tour. This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to a vibrant arts community that celebrates creativity and connection across Placer County.

The challenge for participating artists was to begin with a set of standard-issued materials designed to form a basic box, then to get creative and build from there. These starting components became the foundation for my piece. After having a wood-working friend build the actual base, I added sixteen more found wood structures, each one carefully trimmed, shaped, and fitted together like a puzzle to create the final structure.

City in a Hill, Photo transfers, acrylic, color pencil, wax pastel, ephemera & found items on wood structure, 23 x 12 x 12 in

As with much of my work, City in a Hill incorporates photo transfers and mixed media, blending textures, layers, and natural elements to tell a larger story. The images you’ll see in the piece were all taken on my walks through local trails and neighborhoods around Placer County. A close look will reveal favorite trees, tiny creatures, leaves, and even places for secret treasures, small but meaningful reflections of the environment we live in.

A central theme in my art is the idea that nature is our truest home, a place not only of beauty and solace but of responsibility. Through this work, I hope to invite viewers into a deeper sense of wonder and stewardship. Like a quiet walk in the woods, City in a Hill holds surprises for those who slow down and look closely.

I’d love for you to experience City in a Hill in person before the Gala by visiting the Blue Goose Event Center at 3550 Taylor Road in Loomis, California. There are two public preview opportunities to see all the artwork before the event:

  • Tuesday, May 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. – I will be at this preview event myself!

  • Wednesday morning, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Gala and Live Auction takes place Wednesday evening, May 14, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. A few tickets are still available on the Placer Artists Tour website.

Supporting local art helps keep these stories alive—and helps artists like me keep creating them.
