Handcolored Originals
All of Judith’s work begins with her journal: writing and sketching, as well as using her camera.
She uses vintage cameras with black and white Polaroid film that produces a large negative as well
as a positive, sometimes neglecting the negatives a bit, which creates a roughness that represents
life’s darker moments.
She prints these negatives in small limited editions in a traditional darkroom on archival fiber-based
paper. While she is printing, she sometimes uses overlays to create secondary images on the
photographic print, printing photograms on top of the photograph.
Finally, she colors the prints with watercolors, colored pencils and/or oil pastels. Throughout the
whole process, control is limited. Judith says, “the environment and the materials affect the
final work nearly as much as I do. This reflects my life - so much that happens is out of my
control and it is up to me to make the most of it.”
